The Funkturm, known colloquially as "langer Lulatsch" ("lanky lad"), offers a wonderful panorama over Berlin.
It was built to plans by H. Straumer as a symbol for the newly-conceived exhibition grounds in Charlottenburg. The Funkturm's steel structure, which is based on that of the Eiffel Tower, was built in 1924, and the tower was first operated in 1926 on the occasion of the 3rd IFA Berlin (International Telecommunications Exhibition). With transmissions via the tower, the quality of radio broadcasts greatly improved for Berliners, who had been captivated by the new era of broadcasting since 1923. The total height of the filigreed construction is 150 m; there is a restaurant at 55 m, and a viewing platform at 126 m. By day, it offers a panoramic view over the city's houses, the Grunewald forest and the surrounding lakes; by night, visitors can marvel at a city awash in a glittering sea of lights.

Fairgrounds and ICC

The first buildings on the fairgrounds were erected before the 1st World War. They are, however, not maintained anymore. Built in 1936, the honorary hall is one of the sustained samples of fascist monumental architecture. The halls on the site have been renovated and extended in the last years. Today there are 26 halls on an area of 160,000 square metres. They are venue of international fairs as Grüne Woche, Internationale Tourismus Börse (ITB) and Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA). In the courtyard, there is a splendid summer garden and the Palais am Funkturm. Spreading the elegant charm of the 50's Palais am Funkturm is a popular place for events, festivities and balls.
The halls are situated next to the Internationalen Congress Centrum (ICC Berlin). As Europe's largest convention centre, silver-gleaming ICC reflects modern high-technology architecture. ICC was built between 1975 and 1979 by the architects Ralf Schüler and Ursulina Schüler-Witte and resembles two nested boxes that have room for more than 20000 seats in 80 halls with modern technical equipment. A top location for meetings and conventions, the ICC is also a popular venue for concerts, festivals and other events.
