The Olympic Stadium was constructed from 1935-36 to plans by the architect Werner March as the central building of the Reich sports field for the 1936 Olympic Games.
In 2006 the stadium hosted the final match of FIFA World Cup Germany 2006(TM) between France and Italy.
The platform could originally hold 100,000 (today about 74,000). The building has a two-story pier: the Marathon Gate and a monumental staircase lead to the upper level. The site's conception is characteristic of the monumentalist architecture of the Third Reich, and the Olympic Stadium remains typical of this style. The Olympic Stadium is still used as a sporting venue for the ISTAF light athletics meeting, the matches of local soccer team Hertha BSC and other major events, such as the 12th IAAF World Championships in Athletics berlin 2009(TM). The former Reich sports field includes the Maifeld, which was originally designed for political rallies, and the open-air stage Waldbühne, that hosts concerts featuring international stars. The site also has a bell tower, the Glockenturm im Olympiapark Berlin, which offers a panoramic view over the city. A multimedia documentary exhibition offers information on the various phases of construction and use of the Olympic grounds.
A trail with 45 boards in German and English informs about the construction and history of the formerly called "Reichssportfeld" and buildings and art works of the early "Third Reich". The first part presents the architecture, the sculptures and the constructions. The second part guides the visitor to the whole area with Waldbühne, Maifeld and Langemarckhalle.
