Movie theatres in Berlin

Multiplex cinemasBerlin is well known for its many movie theatre complexes, in no other German city you can choose between so many different multiplex cinemas. Generally, they show the current blockbusters, but also smaller film productions and movies in original versions are presented.

The Arsenal, operated by "Arsenal - Institut für Film- und Videokunst e.V." , is a true paradise for cineasts as there are silent movies, retrospectives and foreign movies shown. Moved into the "Filmhouse" on Potsdamer Platz, the movies playing in two theatres have a high standard. The illuminated advertising in the lounge and the seats in the foyer are still commemorating the old times of the former film house in Welserstraße. The cinema on the Oranienplatz concentrates on French movies, mostly subtitled original versions. With its own film distribution, they often support movies that are often not likely to be played in Germany although there is a considerable interest, as the popularity of this cinema proves. BerlinaleInstead of "Ich seh Dir in die Augen, Kleines" you will hear "Here's looking at you, kid". That is to say that not the German dubbed versions run here but the originals or subtitled versions. The movie theatre Odeon was the first ones to run only original or subtitled film versions. The Cinema Paris is placed in the "Maison de France" by architect Hans Semrau on the famous boulevard Kurfürstendamm. As the name implies, it concentrates particularly on the French movie culture. The Babylon in the district of Kreuzberg provides two theaters showing frequently original versions with or without subtitles. Also in the big commercial movie theatres you will find more and more original versions. The Cinestar in the Sonycenter presents even every of its running movies in the original version.
Original movie versions are also shown in many art-house film theatres.

Kino DelphiThe charm of the 50s, the elegance of the art-deco, the peachiness of the former GDR and the simplicity of the 90s - the buildings and interiors of the following movie theatres feature a very special ambience. Visiting one of those locations is like going on a time journey or at least get to know a quite exceptional place.

The impressive planed building from the 60s, which is under monumental protection, used to be the exemplar from cinemas in the former GDR. Today, the large theater with its silver-coloured curtain concentrates on first screenings of high-quality movies. The "Zoo Palast", built in the 1950s, is a cube- formed building that still holds the charm of past times. However, it is equipped with a high standard in technology and comfort. Providing more than 1000 seats, the large theatre, that used to be one of the venues for the Berlinale, disposes a huge screen with a two-fold curtain and raises a pleasant anticipation for the movie. Berlin, wie es war"Berlin the way it was" is one of the most moving and astonishing filmed portraits of the city in the pre-war years. At the start of the 1940s, director and filmmaker Leo de Laforgúe started to capture the life of the city before it was destroyed in the war, using only a simple handheld camera. And as an encore, theres an additional feature dedicated to the Berliner Schloss.

There are open air movies presented in the "Volkspark Friedrichshain", the "Hasenheide" and many more parks in Berlin. Even on many other spectacular places throughout the city big screens are set up where movie classics become an extraordinary highlight.
